Natural Gas Eases, US Inventories Around 4% Below Last Year

Natural Gas futures rose yesterday but eased in a thin trading session today as some profit selling emerged ahead of the weekend. Tepid cues from global equities also weighed. The commodity currently trades at $2.68 per mmbtu, down 0.40% on the day in global markets. MCX Natural Gas futures are trading at Rs 191.30 per mmbtu, down 0.16% on the day.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported yesterday that US natural gas stockpiles dropped by 177 billion cubic feet for the week ending February 15. Total US stockpiles decreased week over week, falling to around 4.1% below last year’s level and to 17.5% below the five-year average.

The EIA noted that US working stocks of natural gas totaled about 1.705 trillion cubic feet at the end of last week, around 362 billion cubic feet below the five-year average of 2.067 trillion cubic feet and 73 billion cubic feet below last year’s total for the same period. Working gas in storage totaled 1.778 trillion cubic feet for the same period a year ago.
