Barometers firm up; breadth positive

Key benchmarks firmed up in the afternoon trade, tracking positive global cues. At 13:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 81.38 points or 0.21% at 38,108.43. The Nifty 50 index rose 23.30 points or 0.21% at 11,369.50.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.36%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was rose 0.44%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 1,187 shares rose and 1,080 shares fell. A total of 144 shares were unchanged.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises was down 0.92%, while Larsen & Toubro (up 0.01%) and Hindustan Unilever (up 0.90%) advanced ahead of their Q1 June 2019 result today.

Asian Paints (up 2.29%), Power Grid Corporation of India (up 2.28%), ITC (up 2%), Titan Company (up 1.96%) and GAIL (India) (up 1.67%), advanced.

Housing Development Finance Corporation (down 1.86%), HDFC Bank (down 1.58%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (down 1.55%), State Bank of India (down 1.51%), Bajaj Auto (down 1.34%) and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (down 1.17%), declined.

Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 2.71%. The bank's net profit rose 32.71% to Rs 1360.20 crore on 19.57% rise in total income to Rs 7944.61 crore in Q1 June 2019 over Q1 June 2018. The result was announced after market hours yesterday, 22 July 2019.

Kotak Mahindra Bank's gross non-performing assets (NPAs) stood at Rs 4613.52 crore as on 30 June 2019 as against Rs 4467.94 crore as on 31 March 2019 and Rs 3899.45 crore as on 30 June 2018. The ratio of gross NPAs to gross advances stood at 2.19% as on 30 June 2019 as against 2.14% as on 31 March 2019 and 2.17% as on 30 June 2018. The ratio of net NPAs to net advances stood at 0.73% as on 30 June 2019 as against 0.75% as on 31 March 2019 and 0.86% as on 30 June 2018.

Overseas, shares in Europe and Asia were trading higher on Tuesday, following overnight gains on Wall Street amid better-than-expected earnings.

In Europe, the U.K. is set to find out who its next prime minister will be this week as voting within the U.K.'s ruling Conservative Party comes to a close. The vote comes after Prime Minister Theresa May announced she would resign following repeated parliamentary rejections of the Brexit deal she struck with the EU. As such, the party leadership race has focused on how each contender would deal with Brexit ahead of a new departure deadline of October 31.

U.S. stock-market indexes closed higher Monday, as investors adjusted expectations around a widely anticipated rate cut by the Federal Reserve at the end of the month and began wading through a sea of corporate results after a strong start to earnings season. Investors are awaiting quarterly earnings from marquee companies Facebook, Alphabet and Amazon later this week.

U.S.-China trade negotiations were in focus, after reports that the two sides would soon meet face-to-face, with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin traveling to Beijing next week.
